Even though connectivity and distractions are painted as the main antagonist in Book - Deep Work.. 3 Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, they do not inherently hinder our ability to do Deep Work just because we engage with them. The solution that Newport proposes here is time blocking, where we allow internet technologies into our lives for set periods of time.
I am not 100% sure if I agree with this when it comes to modern social media applications and multiplayer video games:
- Apps like TikTok train the brain to do rapid task switching, as videos themselves are so short.
- Engaging with addicting technologies strengthens the feedback loops we associate with them, making it a lot harder to resist the temptation to get distracted.
A very simple way of connectivity without distraction is to have a set schedule for check messages, as Checking emails only twice a day is an easy way to improve productivity
